Five Success Tips for Adult College Students

Success is dependent on effort.

Here are my top five tips to help students succeed in their college classes:

  1. Show up on the first day and be on time (or early). Attend class as much as possible during the semester. Doing so will help you keep up with the lectures and activities. Ask a peer you trust to take notes on days when you cannot attend. Reach out to your professor by email with the reason you missed class and apologize. This will let your instructor know you care about the class and want to do well.
  2. Prepare for the class and actively participate.  Do the assignments, read the textbook, and complete any preparation work (pre-work) that is required before coming to class. This will make the class easier for you and more productive when participating in group activities and discussions.
  3. Follow directions by carefully reading the assignment instructions. Confirm that you have included all requirements before submitting assignments for grading. Review your draft and make any needed revisions based on the requirements.
  4. Ask for help from your instructor and/or the college resource centers on campus.  These resources include the Student Success Center, Writing Center, Library, Student Health Center, and Financial Aid Office. Reach out to your instructor with questions BEFORE submitting assignments for grading.
  5. Manage your time using a planner or online tools and apps. As an adult college student, you need to balance work, family, friends, hobbies, and your college classes to be successful.

Which of these tips do you find most helpful? Which ones do you plan to use during your summer and/or fall classes?

I look forward to reading your replies! Sincerely, Dr. Eva Fisher
