Creating Online Courses
Creating Online Courses
I have decided to create my first course for business clients in 2021. I plan to document my course creation journey on my blog pages.
The reason I am doing this is to help answer the question: How is building an online course for my business similar to and/or different from creating online courses for college students?
I am aware that other instructors and course creators may have already covered this topic. However, I hope this blog will provide useful information for other college instructors. Perhaps other teachers and instructors would like to transform their class content into courses for a larger audience.
Popularity of Online Courses
There are many courses offered by college professors to the public using Coursera and other platforms. Free online courses are offered by prestigious colleges and universities, such as Harvard University. Thus, offering college courses to the public is not a new phenomenon. It has been happening since the rise in popularity of online universities such as CSU Global.
Before the pandemic, many brick-and-mortar institutions were wary of online learning, University faculty feared that the quality of instruction would not match what students could learn on campus in face-to-face classrooms.
Online Learning During the Pandemic
Schools from K-12 and higher learning institutions needed to move classes to remote learning during the pandemic. As a result, online teaching is becoming widely accepted as another mode of learning for younger students as well as adults. There are advantages and disadvantages to online learning which are beyond the scope of what I want to cover with this blog topic. I will be glad to provide more information and get feedback about the pros and cons of online learning in my Online Teaching and Learning blogs.
Becoming an Adjunct Entrepreneur
There are two main reasons for creating an online course for my business. These are control over the course content and my desire to become an adjunct entrepreneur. I have previously created content for classes based on the required textbooks and learning outcomes. My desire for financial freedom is another motivating force for moving forward with creating online courses.
I have wanted to create my own online course for the last two years, since taking some online course creation workshops by Jeannine Blackwell. I am going to attend a Teach Your Gift Live course building virtual workshop in August.
I look forward to sharing the process with my blog readers! Please contact me with questions, advice, and feedback at eva@feartocourage.com.
